Why We Affirm

We affirm identity because we believe in the inherent dignity and worth of every individual. Recognizing and celebrating diverse identities is fundamental to creating a supportive, inclusive, and affirming environment.

A Family for Every Child is a youth-serving agency. We partner with prospective adoptive families, Host Homes, and community members to support the needs of our community’s youth. Statistics show that LGBTQ+, Black, Native American, and Alaskan Native youth are disproportionately represented in both foster care and youth homelessness. More than 30% of foster youth and 40% of unhoused youth identify as LGBTQ+. Black youth are 83% more likely to report homelessness than their white peers.

Youth suicide has reached epidemic levels in our community. Foster and homeless youth share common risk factors for youth suicide, including a history of trauma, abuse, family rejection, and a lack of stable, nurturing support systems. They are 3 times more likely to consider suicide and 4 times more likely to make an attempt than their peers. The presence of a single affirming caregiver can reduce the likelihood of youth suicide by 57%. At AFFEC, we understand that affirming identity is not just beneficial; it is essential. By affirming identity, we foster a sense of belonging and self-worth, which is crucial for personal development and mental health.

Our commitment extends beyond the youth we serve to include the parents we work with, the partners we collaborate with, and the talented individuals who make up our team. Our holistic approach ensures every interaction within our organization is grounded in respect, understanding, and support for each person’s unique identity and experience. We actively recruit diverse participants, support and coach affirming caregivers, and implement best practices to create safe spaces where all identities are celebrated. In doing so, we not only support individual growth but also strengthen our entire community.
