Our Approach

Evidence-based knowledge and national regulations regarding person-centered care are important tools that ensure every child is treated with respect and dignity and matched with a family that meets their individual needs.

Trauma-Informed Care

As a community we must recognize the historical and social forces that further traumatize children and impact long-term placement success.

AFFEC recognizes that families are unique, and while many people may have a picture of that perfect family, life is not perfect. We must look to the family’s unique characteristics to find the right fit—the right match. It is by acknowledging our differences that we create environments that allow children to thrive.

Our History

AFFEC began as the vision of its founder and Executive Director, Christy Obie-Barrett. Christy drew upon her own firsthand experiences as a tireless child advocate and mother of nine adoptive, and three biological children. Christy, along with dozens of dedicated volunteers, formed AFFEC in October 2006. The organization has grown into one which is focused, not only on locating permanent and loving adoptive families for waiting foster children, but on identifying and reconnecting lost family members with older foster children who might otherwise end up homeless and have little hope for a bright future.

Who We Are

A Family For Every Child (AFFEC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to finding permanent and loving adoptive families for waiting foster children. To accomplish our mission, we focus on finding loving and permanent families for children who the foster care system considers “hard to place.” The children who fall into this category are usually older, ethnically diverse, part of a sibling group, or have severe physical, emotional and/or developmental challenges.

Our Mission

A Family for Every Child is dedicated to finding loving, permanent families for every waiting foster child.

Resolution Statement

A Family for Every Child (AFFEC) believes all youth, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, deserve a permanent and loving family who acknowledges and affirms their identity.  Affirming a youth’s identity means caregivers help the youth develop positive feelings about their identity, support the youth’s sense of belonging to their identified social groups, and ensure the youth has clear caregiver acceptance.
